1000 Monuments of Genius order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 62.00 each
Hardback
Author: Christopher E.M. Pearson
Published by: Sirrocco-Parkstone International
In Stock: 1
Since the mythical Tower of Babel, humans have continuously tried to erect monuments to match their oversized egos. With ancient ziggurats, the Taj Mahal or the Empire State Building, man has for centuries demonstrated his force by raising structures for purposes both religious and profane. As symbols of a people's values and a civilisation's grandeur, these monuments still fascinate and attract a public captivated by the creativity and ingenuity of these architects and stonemasons. Their historical message goes far beyond mere art history, for they also tell us of the lives and evolution of the peoples of the past, as does the Parthenon in Athens, many times destroyed, rebuilt, and restored once again.

You'll be amazed by what's happened since 10x10 / 2!

Green architecture has gone from novelty to necessity, walls have gone from necessary to optional, hula hoops have become a building material. Local is the new international. Architecture is the new art. The 100 architects featured in this volume, the latest in our successful 10x10 series, are pushing the boundaries of design and redefining the very meaning of architecture: a building sliced in half in order to design the space in between; a one-ton floating object of seeming weightlessness; a high-end shop in downtown Seoul covered entirely in vegetation; and, a skyscraper that seems to disappear on sunny days.
This is architecture as you've never seen it before!
10x10 / 3 is a comprehensive and global view of new architecture, presenting the work of 100 up-and-coming architects from around the world, selected by 10 of the best-informed critics, ... more

Andrea Palladio (Basic Architecture) order quantity

NZ$ 25.00 each
Paperback
Author: Manfred Wundram
Published by: Taschen
In Stock: 1
This is the classical Roman revivalist. With this introduction to the work of Andrea Palladio (1508-1580), TASCHEN's "Basic Architecture" series shines its spotlight on one of the most influential figures in the history of Western architecture. Palladio's 'Villa Rotonda' in Vicenza became the most famous building of its kind; it influenced many later designs and remains an important source of inspiration for today's architects. The Palladian style, distinguished by the typical Serlian windows, pillared facades resembling Roman temples, symmetrical floor plans, and elevations, was imported to other European countries and became widely known; in Great Britain it was one the important roots of 17th and 18th century architecture. In the 19th century, American architecture heavily referred to the style, as seen in, for example, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello home.

Praise for Antoni Gaudi: Complete Works:
'In light of the growing and general recognition of Gaudi's work, 150 years after his birth, I ponder the reason for this phenomenon, which is so unusual in the field of architecture. Gaudi did not become a success as a result of the quantity of works completed, since he only directed about 20 important projects. Nor is his success due to the wide geographic diffusion of his buildings, since the majority of them are concentrated in the city of Barcelona. Neither is the architect's fame due to the fact that he was a great promoter of his work and character, since he isolated himself from everything that could disturb his work. Nor were his proposals accepted with enthusiasm by his contemporaries who, in general, were hostile towards them. Gaudi's secret was probably knowing how to tackle architectural creation in a distinct manner, without artistic or technical prejudices. His ... more

The Arts and Crafts movement in architecture, interior design, and decorative arts reached its peak between 1880 and 1910 in Britain and North America. Architecture Materials - Glass order quantity

Paperback
Author: Evergreen
Published by: Taschen
In Stock: 1
The use of glass as a building material was encouraged in particular by garden design, as the protection of exotic plants required the construction of greenhouses and orangeries. In a record time of just five months, Joseph Paxton, himself a garden designer, put up the Crystal Palace in London's Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. A totally glazed exhibition hall, of gigantic proportions by the standards of the time, it was a milestone in the history of building in glass. The result was a totally new spatial quality and a new aesthetic, as interior and exterior could now enter into a quite unique mutual relationship. Since then, architecture without glass has been inconceivable, and glass has been used as a construction material by renowned architects worldwide for industrial buildings and private houses. Glass masterpieces, erected in particular in combination with other materials, for example, wood, stone or steel, ... more

Bridges : The science and art of the world's most inspiring structures order quantity

Author: David Blockley
Published by: Oxford University Press
In Stock: 1
Bridges touch all our lives - every day we are likely to cross a bridge, or go under one. How many of us stop to consider how the bridge stands up and what sort of people designed and built something so strong? Bridge building is a magnificent example of the practical and every day use of science. However, the story of bridges goes beyond science and technology, and involves issues relating to artistic and cultural development. After all, bridges are built by people, for people. Bridges can be icons for whole cities; just consider New York's Brooklyn Bridge, London's Tower Bridge, and Sydney's Harbour Bridge. Such bridges can be considered functional public art, as they have the power to delight or be an eyesore. David Blockley explains how to read a bridge, in all its different forms, design, and construction, and the way the forces flow through arches and beams. He combines the engineering of how bridges stand up with the cultural, ... more

Charles Rennie Mackintosh order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 120.00 each
Hardback
Author: James Macaulay
Published by: WW Norton & Co
In Stock: 1
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was Scotland's greatest architect and arguably one of the world's most admired. He had far fewer commissions than his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright but with a few bold and innovative structures - the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House among them - he had a profound influence on art and architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. Like Wright, Mackintosh designed in totality, down to the furniture and fabrics used in his structures, and he was influenced by the Japanese, particularly in the simplicity of his designs and themes from nature. Hailed as a pioneer of modernism, Mackintosh was, however, perhaps truer to the Arts and Crafts movement than has been realized. With both historic photographs and modern images of Mackintosh's major works taken by the noted architectural photographer Mark Fiennes, this is an essential and beautiful addition to the Mackintosh canon and to architectural history.
