A New Zealand step-by-step guide to growing your own vegetable and fruit gives people of all ages the gardening basics, as well as fun projects and activies to spark the imagination and cultivate green thumbs. Growing your own veges and fruit is the new black - more and more people are turning back to growing their own food in this time of rising food and petrol costs and plummeting house values. And for some time now, primary schools have been teaching their students how to grow plants and have extra-curricular garden clubs. The book re-introduces the idea that food comes from nature - not the supermarket - and the acts of growing, preparing and sharing it can be immensely satisfying. Whether it's a tree house perched among the branches or a rustic gazebo by a pond, a small-scale playhouse or a whimsical dovecote, structures in the garden conjure images of long-ago summers and thoughts of childhood, innocence and worry-free relaxation. "Garden Architecture" inspires readers to recreate these bygone days by constructing their own outdoor features: arbors and pergolas, greenhouses and potting sheds, tiny cottages and canopied cabanas, birdhouses and bird feeders. With 175 photographs of structures in beautiful garden settings, this book showcases a huge array of ideas for outdoor projects. Some are largely decorative, some more utilitarian - a tool shed, a dining gazebo, a vine-covered sunshade - but all are charming in their design. Detailed instructions are given for making 50 of these projects with illustrations explaining the techniques and materials used. Bringing out the builder and the dreamer in all of us, ...

The most famous botanical record ever committed to paper: Basilius Besler's complete Book of Plants of 1613
A magnificent pictorial document of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time,
The Book of Plants
is in a class of its own when it comes to the variety and range of flowers engraved.
Working under Basilius Besler, a team of at least ten engravers worked on this massive project, translating in situ and specimen drawings faithfully to copper plates. Nearly four hundred years old, the book has survived though the gardens did not; they were destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1634. However, in 1998 a reconstruction of the original garden opened to the public in Eichstätt.
This facsimile's reproductions - structured by seasons - are taken from a hand-painted edition, one of only a few still extant. In auction, the asking price for a first edition copy is half a million dollars. You can ...

Robert Pogue Harrison
Published by:
University of Chicago Press

1
Humans have long turned to gardens - both real and imaginary - for sanctuary from the frenzy and tumult that surrounds them. With "Gardens", Robert Pogue Harrison graces readers with a thoughtful, wide-ranging examination of the many ways gardens evoke the human condition. Moving from the gardens of ancient philosophers to the gardens of homeless people in contemporary New York, he shows how, again and again, the garden has served as a check against the destruction and losses of history. Alive with the echoes and arguments of Western thought, "Gardens" is a fitting continuation of the intellectual journeys of Harrison's earlier classics, "Forests" and "The Dominion of the Dead". Voltaire famously urged us to cultivate our gardens; with this compelling volume, Harrison reminds us of the nature of that responsibility - and its enduring importance to humanity.
