Just in Time to be Too Late : Why Men are Like Buses order quantity
  +   -

NZ$ 35.00 each
Paperback
Author: Peta Mathias
Published by: Penguin Books (N.Z.) Ltd.
In Stock: 30
In her bestselling guide Can We Help it if We're Fabulous, the irrepressible Peta Mathias shared her thoughts on being a woman. Now, with Just in Time to be Too Late, she turns her attention to what it means to be a man in the 21st century. What makes men cry? Why are bad boys so irresistible? What exactly is the point of sport? To what extent is a man's self worth connected to his job? What do men look for in a relationship? Does a man ever get over his first love? Why do men lie? What does he need to be happy? And, of course, why are men like buses? These are just some of the vexing questions Peta looks for answers to. Though she has been married and has had her fair share both of meaningful relationships and flirtatious dalliances, Peta is the first to admit that she knew very little about the opposite sex when she began work on this book - 'A virgin would know more about men than me because she's probably listened more.' ... more

Author: Douglas Wright & Leonard Wilcox (photography John Savage)
Published by: Craig Potton Publishing

During his career Douglas Wright established himself as New Zealand's leading contemporary dancer and choreographer. He started out with the Limbs Dance Company in 1980, then worked in New York with the Paul Taylor Company and DV8 Physical Theatre in London before forming the Douglas Wright Dance Company in Auckland in 1989. During this time he created over 30 major dance works, which culminated in his 2006 masterpiece 'Black Milk', his last major work. The dance critic Jennifer Shennan wrote, 'In my opinion, this is Wright's, New Zealand's, and dare I say it, the world's finest choreography. I dare.' Black Milk is a permanent record of this extraordinary piece of dance theatre, built largely around the remarkable images of Auckland photographer John Savage. When seeing these images Douglas Wright commented: When I saw John's first pictures of a performance I felt that here, for the only time in my experience in photography, someone ... more

Phone Home Berlin : Collected Non-fiction order quantity

NZ$ 35.00 each
Paperback
Author: Nigel Cox
Published by: Victoria University Press
In Stock: 4
Nigel Cox (1951-2006) was one of New Zealand's major writers. His six novels opened up a space in New Zealand literature that hadn't existed before, a space in which a recognisable New Zealand reality is illuminated by a mythic dimension drawn from twentieth-century popular culture. The essays and other writing collected in this book provide remarkable insights into these books and the life and interests behind them.

Phone Home Berlin was planned by Nigel before his death at the age of 55 in 2006, and is edited by his publisher and friend Fergus Barrowman. First published November 2007.

Shear Hard Work : A history of shearing in New Zealand order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 45.00 each
Paperback
Author: Hazel Riseborough
Published by: Auckland University Press
In Stock: 3
Shear Hard Work tells the story of shearers and brings to life the world of the shearing shed for the first time. From the 1860s, when shearers were first identified as the 'very dregs of the colonial democracy', to the present day, when Kiwi shearers set world records and shear sheep around the globe, shearers have played a key role in New Zealand life. A historian and qualified wool classer, Riseborough has travelled from merino farms in Alexandra to the women's world record attempt at Waikaretu, from "the first Maori in Milton" to Joe Paewai's Dannevirke shearing family, to tell this great New Zealand story. Riseborough recounts the history of shearing in the words of the shearers, shedhands, wool handlers and cooks who work in the sheds, compete at the shows and set the records. She chronicles key changes in the business - from mechanisation to the expansion of the shearing season and the shrinking of the New Zealand flock. She ... more

Paperback
Author: Marko Cunningham
Published by: Random House New Zealand Ltd
In Stock: 3
"Today I raced through the streets of Bangkok in my rescue vehicle, extracted an injured man from a truck at the port, then took him to hospital. Shortly after, in another area, I donned a fire suit and breathing apparatus and walked into a flaming building looking for trapped people and ended up rescuing a firefighter who had fallen. Later in the day I went to a house to collect a dead body and took it to the local morgue. I will do the same all night, getting attacked by street dogs, arguing with arrogant and ignorant policemen and nurses, risking being struck by unconcerned and aggressive motorists at every accident I attend, or even shot by a rival group ..."

This is a normal day for New Zealander Marko Cunningham, the only foreigner to work as a volunteer ambulance officer or 'bodysnatcher' in Bangkok, Thailand. This is the story of eight years of his crazy adventures in the happy chaos that is Thailand - involving ... more

A Close Encounter with Ecclesiastes

Though 23 centuries have passed since a Jewish sage calling himself the Proclaimer (Ecclesiastes) set down his thoughts about life, they are strangely in tune with today's secular age. Lloyd Geering has ingeniously brought Ecclesiastes to life in a series of dialogues with him, which show that, in today's terminology, Ecclesiastes was a free-thinker, a humanist and an existentialist. In fact, this biblical heretic is at odds with the rest of the Bible - he finds no discernible thread of purpose in life or the universe, and proposes that though Nature operates in cycles, much of human life is determined by sheer chance. The role of the sage, as Ecclesiastes saw it, was not to pass on gems of eternal wisdom, but to goad us to think things out for ourselves in our search for meaning.

Montana New Zealand Book Awards 2009: History Winner

This book is a study of Crown Maori land policy and practice in the period 1869-1929, from the establishment of the Native Land Court power until the cessation by Gordon Coates of large-scale Crown purchasing. In the intervening period virtually the main function of the Native Department was to purchase Maori land, and, to the extent that the New Zealand state had a Maori policy, the focus was on acquisition of Maori land in the interests of closer settlement. Locked into complex legal structures which prevented them from turning their assets into capital and thus increasing their value, many Maori took the only realistic option available, and sold. The story the book tells is in many ways a bleak and grim one of a tidal wave of Crown purchasing crashing over a people who were in very difficult circumstances. Yet it is important to recognise that government purchasing of Maori ... more

Hardback
Author: Edited by Simon Pollard
Published by: Penguin Books (N.Z.) Ltd.

In July 1942 with a notebook and pencil he had bought from a German guard, Dudley Muff started Alison's Book. Dudley was 42 and a prisoner of war in Stalag XVIIIB in Germany and his niece Alison was four and living in Timaru. It starts "Dear Alison, Mummy has told you all about Uncle being a prisoner, so now I must tell you what we do to pass the time."
With humorous entries, sketches and what he called "little men" his story grew until it became an unbelievable account of his time served in two prisoner-of-war camps. Given to Alison when he returned to Christchurch after the war, she read it first as a child, purely for the excitement such a story could impart.
Only later, rereading this as an adult, did she see through the veiled references to how life really was in the camps. After returning to Christchurch, Dudley added a one page postscript describing his journey to freedom. He finished the book with, "Now I shall ... more

Paperback
Author: Gareth Morgan & Geoff Simmons with John McCrystal
Published by: Public Interest Publishing (NZ)
In Stock: 2
New Zealand’s health system is a political football, held together only by the high quality of our nurses and doctors, according to a new book from Gareth Morgan.
While the local health system scrubs up surprisingly well globally, Dr Morgan finds a substantial mismatch between the public’s expectations and what the health system actually delivers. Morgan and Simmons go behind the scenes of the New Zealand public health system and bring clarity to the issues that need to be addressed if crisis is to be avoided.
The book explores the consequences of ongoing avoidance of the tough calls on rationing and prioritisation. It considers how many New Zealanders are already suffering or missing out from health care because of ad-hoc interventions in response to pressure groups.
