A gripping and candid account of Vince Siemer's 6 week stint in Mount Eden Prison. Siemers was convicted of civil contempt in 2007. "His crime involved nothing more than speaking truthfully about a known public threat."
Notes: THE ROCK – an Intimate and Personal Account Inside New Zealand’s Most Notorious Prison
Even paradise has its dark secrets, largely hidden from public view by powerful political forces. Though the inevitable sacrifice to society at large can be quite dear, a fostered image is maintained at all costs by partisans who derive great personal benefits from concealing public information and egregious crimes. Reputations are at stake. Essential laws take a back seat to the self-preservation of those unfettered reputations. Lives can be lost - as this true story reveals. But what happens when secrets and confidentiality take over in the name of public good? What if we have information that these secrets cover up massive corruption? For many of us the necessities of everyday life obscure these lurking threats, until a catastrophic event leads to an awakening. This book depicts one such event. On 4 July 2007 Businessman Vince Siemer was convicted of civil contempt (in absentia) in the New Zealand High Court and subsequently sentenced to six weeks in the notorious Mt Eden prison. His crime involved nothing more than speaking truthfully about a known public threat. Even where truth can be stranger than fiction, the author's gripping, no-holds barred and scandalous account of being seized at the Auckland International Airport and hauled to prison will give the most law-abiding readers a fright. The reader walks in the author's shoes as he provides a chronological account of his days in prison, the events that led up to his incarceration, the effects of his resultant hunger strike and the public protests at his plight.
