Are you struggling to get your tween to read? Keen for some evidence-backed and realistic strategies to (re)engage your teenager with books? I am here to help!
As a mother and a high school English teacher, I know how hard it is to convince 2020s teenagers to read even when they have to, let alone for pleasure. Throughout my career I’ve tried a variety of approaches, including working in libraries, as a teacher aide and then as a teacher and faculty course leader, and even writing a Notable Book Award winning YA series. Most recently, I’ve completed my PhD in Education, researching and developing strategies to get teens reading in the digital age. I now have a set of practical tips and tricks that I have personally tested and found effective.
Join me for a brief overview of the brain science behind reading, why it matters so much for learning and wellbeing, what happens when reading drops off during adolescence, and what adults can do to help. I’ll then share practical, adaptable ways to apply this learning at home, helping you work with your child to build their reading fitness in ways that are realistic, enjoyable, and suited to your family. I guarantee the long-term benefits will extend far beyond their school grades.
