The Hobbit
J.R.R. Tolkien, with illustrations by Jemima Catlin

Sometimes a publisher decides to print an old story in a different form.

My first acquaintance with ‘The Hobbit’ took place in 1969 when I read it to my class of forty, nine year old pupils. Prior to that I had not read Tolkien.
I set aside one hour each Friday afternoon for the reading. The children and I loved every word and eagerly awaited the next chapter.

A few months ago I discovered a new edition of this book at Time Out, and I was captivated immediately. This edition, unlike the earlier copy I read, is illustrated with fascinating pictures beautifully painted and drawn by Jemima Catlin.

She depicts the scenery and characters to perfection. Its hard cover is also illustrated and would be fairly child proof.

As soon as I saw it I knew I would buy it. I have it now. It sits in my book case awaiting the time when one of my great-grandchildren is old enough to listen to the story. I hope, when that time comes, he or she will enjoy it as much as my class did so long ago.

Kath is also an author in her own right! Each of her stories is woven with detail from her own fascinating life. Check out her children's book Sean Kelly and the Leprechaun (A great read for young rugby fans!)

This re imagining of a classic makes an extraordinary gift. Click the cover to shop!
