Book Launch: The Friday Poem edited by Steve Braunias

Come and celebrate The Friday Poem! Steve will give a brief, pithy speech on the state of New Zealand poetry, and introduce readings from five poets who feature in the book – Courtney Sina Meredith, Kevin Ireland, Dominic Hoey, Simone Kaho, and Steve Toussaint.

“Something exciting is happening in New Zealand poetry, a sort of revolution,” claims Steve Braunias in his introduction to this stunning new anthology of 100 poems. As literary editor at The Spinoff, he has published new poetry every Friday for the past four years.

Along the way introduced the phenomenal Hera Lindsay Bird to a wide audience, and discovered startling and often hilarious work by other young women poets. The best of their poems appear here alongside writing by established poets such as Sam Hunt, Bill Manhire, poet laureate Selina Tusitala Marsh, Elizabeth Smither, Brian Turner, and Ashleigh Young. It also finds room for former Conservative Party leader Colin Craig.

Observations on our way of life, Pasifika voices, te reo, satire, confession, love poetry, poetry for funerals, a poem for Anzac Day – The Friday Poem is New Zealand poetry at its best.
